The Story of Christiansted High School
Developed by educator Stephanie Chalana Brown, these lessons explore the history of Christiansted High School during its years in the Old Danish Military Barracks on Hospital Street. The lessons use the barracks as a material witness, a physical record of the changing history of the Virgin Islands, to connect the school’s story to broader social, political, and educational developments.
Students explore several interconnected themes: education before emancipation; educational reform after emancipation; the establishment of the Territory’s first public high school; debates over vocational and academic education; the role of Governor Paul Martin Pearson; and the effects of the Great Depression. Together, these stories trace the barracks’ transformation from a colonial military structure into a center of learning.
